What Does the Sun Have to Do with Your Mood & Health?

Unfortunately, we have been led to believe that the sun is something bad. The truth is that the sun is what gives us life! No sun, no life. This modern belief that the sun is bad has really compromised our health in myriad ways, and sun phobia and avoidance is continuing to seriously damage our overall physical and mental health.

Here are some facts about the sun:

☀️ Ancient cultures revered the sun because instinctively they knew that the sun was life-giving.

☀️ The sun has been used to heal for millennia (heliotherapy).

☀️ “The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1903 was awarded to Niels Ryberg Finsen ‘in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases, especially lupus vulgaris, with concentrated light radiation, whereby he has opened a new avenue for medical science.’”

☀️ The sun provides all the energy needed to sustain life.

☀️ The sun provides the light code which optimizes our bodily functions by telling the body what processes to run at which time of day, and when to be active and when to rest and repair (at night).

Different light spectrums occur throughout the day, and we need exposure to all of them to ensure our body is getting the light code it needs. Here is an example of the spectrums throughout the day:

As you can see from this graphic, the code of the sunlight changes a lot from sunrise to sunset. The light from the sun that is visible to us is in the electromagnetic spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (ROYGBIV) that we typically think of as the colors of the rainbow.

The parts of the light spectrum that we cannot see that are important for supporting our health/mood are the infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths.
